England Hockey star Maddie Hinch wins Sportswoman of the Month

England Hockey goalkeeper Maddie Hinch has been crowned Sportswoman of the Month for August.

Hinch claimed three-quarters of the public vote to win the award ahead of apprentice jockey Sammy Jo Bell. Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill came third after winning heptathlon gold at the Beijing World Championships in her first major competition since London 2012.

Hinch was instrumental in England's gold medal success at the European Hockey Championships, making a string of saves to force a penalty shoot-out against Olympic champions the Netherlands in the final.

The 26-year-old then went on to save three penalties as England triumphed 3-1 in the shoot-out to win their first major tournament in almost a quarter of a century.

"When I saw that I was up against Jessica Ennis-Hill I thought wow that is quite some company to be in so I'm delighted," Hinch told the Sportswomen show on SportNews News HQ.

"It's been a great year for hockey," she added.
